Surgery of the Ear
(Otoplasty)

Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) is a Plastic Surgery procedure designed to correct the size and placement of prominent ears. Ears that protrude, are not symmetrical or are mildly distorted can be surgically corrected. The final outcome of this procedure makes the ears more proportional to the size and shape of one’s head and is extremely beneficial to those who are self-conscious about their ears.

Who is the best candidate for Ear Surgery?
For the most part, the surgical procedure is done on healthy children when the ears are fully grown, which is typically between the ages of four and 14. The earlier the surgery, the more pliable the cartilage is for re-shaping and, of course, the less teasing and ridicule the child will have to endure if the ears are extremely prominent. The parent’s positive attitude about the surgery, and the confidence that the child’s best interest is at heart will make for a more successful experience.

Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) on adults, when appropriate, is also possible. There are generally no additional risks associated with ear surgery on an older patient. The Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) will not alter one’s ability to hear. Adults should be aware that the cartilage is less flexible than it was when they were a child and the ability to mold cartilage, if necessary, is lessened but the final results are extremely good.

Anesthesia
If the patient is young, general anesthesia is usually recommended so the child will sleep through the surgical procedure. Older children or adults, may have the Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) using local anesthesia, combined with a sedative, so they will be awake but relaxed. The Plastic Surgeon will make this decision based on his evaluation.

A typical Ear Surgery Procedure
Under normal conditions,Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) takes about 2 hours to complete. An incision is placed behind the ear, in the crease where the ear joins to the head. Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) usually involves the removal of cartilage and skin, and sometimes trimming of the cartilage into a more pleasing shape is required. Finally the ears are “pinned” with permanent sutures to secure the sculpted cartilage until healing can hold it in place.

Outcome of Ear Surgery
Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) leaves only a thin scar behind the ear that fads with time and usually is not visible. The risks of Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) are minimal and the results are amazing.
